An Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately told my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
